Jacques Cartier, the notorious French explorer circa 1536, was the first to learn from the native St. Lawrence Iroquoians how spruce tips could be boiled to fend off scurvy. This knowledge was picked up by the British in the 1700’s when sea trade truly boomed, and they began to produce spruce beer with molasses for long voyages. This unusual beverage still exists today, though is more popular in Canada than in the States or countries abroad. Today you can enjoy spruce soda, beer, and candies with a bit of effort to locate them, but our Alpine scent is always an easy find.
