Much like Glühwein, the renowned German holiday drink, Cheer features the same combination of oranges, cloves, and cinnamon that make this beverage perfect for warming carolers and well-wishers in the streets of Alsace-Lorraine. The origin of this drink emerged from the urge to keep old wine from going bad. People of the time mixed aging bottles with spices and honey and boiled them together to make the wine palatable again. The oldest historical record of Glühwein is from 1420 AD, where a nobleman’s gold-plated tankard was dedicated solely to this traditional and much-beloved drink. Today, known more commonly as mulled wine, Glühwein is prepared with the addition of citrus fruits and cardamom, which create a scent that even now is associated with seasonal festivity and Cheer.
